Chapter Fourteen

Finn smirked at Annabella and turned his attention back to his new sister-in-law. This meeting had been a farce up to now. Nothing was going to change until the town got to vote. If they didn’t manipulate the people, at least. But maybe with the evidence Summer had, things would change and they could get these people off the council who had no business making decisions.

“Not long ago, I met my mate and found out about his mother and brother who disappeared when he was young. I offered my assistance to find them. Did I mention I’m a private investigator?” Summer paused and glanced around the room. “My investigation led me here. I stopped at the tourist center and spoke with Ingrid. And that happened to be where I saw Bess the first time. Doesn’t she look amazing! I hardly recognize her after her transformation!”

Finn laughed and glanced at his grandparents. It was their turn to look furious.

“She sent me over to Annabella’s dating agency, who so kindly called her son Gus to kidnap me. Where is Gus, by the way?”

Quinn snorted and Finn found himself chuckling. He hoped Annabella answered that question. Annabella opened her mouth then closed it again. The members of the council who had been around awhile were muttering quietly and glancing at each other. Finn hoped this was a good sign.

“Anyway, I digress. My mate and his father, with the help of Jared, rescued me. As we were leaving town, we were stopped by Alpha Blackmon, who revealed his plan to bring men into town to impregnate the town’s women and have the men share them so your town would thrive with new blood.” Winter shifted in her seat and Finn put his arm around her.

“Alpha Blackmon and his goon squad attacked us and were killed. Ingrid was brought forward and confessed knowing of this plan and told us Gus had taken Bess away. I think you have her in custody awaiting justice if I’m not mistaken.”

Councilman Regan glanced down the table and the ones to respond were his grandparents who just smirked, Annabella frowned, and Mr. Charles moved in his chair, not making eye contact with anyone. “To my knowledge, no one is being held pending anything. Councilman Smith, Councilman Wood, are you aware of this?” Both shook their heads in the negative.

“Councilman and Councilwoman Blackburn, are you aware?” They both nodded, and Mr. Regan turned his attention to Annabella and Councilman Charles. “And you two are you aware also?” Again, they both nodded.

Councilman Wood cleared his throat. “I think it’s time I put my two cents in. I’ve been on the council longer than anyone. I’ve seen the changes made in the name of progress. While everything you have said today, ma’am, has been news to me, I was aware of why Mayor Blackmon made changes to our laws, and at the time, I approved because it seemed like the only solution. I can see now I was mistaken.”

He shifted to look at the four new council members.
